Things To Do Reunion Weekend

Coming to the John Jay High School 30th reunion? Great! There are lots of fun family activities in the Hudson Valley these days. So many, you won't be able to fit them all in!

Is golf your thing? My bet is that Dutchess County has one of the highest golf courses per capita ratios in the state! Serious golfers can check out this huge list  but the old standards, Baird State Park, Casperkill (Old IBM Country Club) and Beekman Golf courses are still open and the Links in Lagrange are challenging.

In a hurry? Fishkill Golf behind the old Dutchess Mall on Rt. 9 features a 12 hole Par 41 2571 Yard Executive Length Golf Course, a genuine grass tee range, along with covered and lighted mat stalls ...chipping and putting greens, sand bunker & 18 holes of miniature golf are also available.  http://fishkillgolf.com/

More mini-golf and driving ranges at East Fishkill Golf Center, just down the road from JJHS on Rt. 52 in Hopewell. Also features batting cages !   http://www.eastfishkillgolf.com/

Have you crossed the Walkway Over the Hudson yet? Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park is a linear walkway spanning the Hudson River in Poughkeepsie, just north of the Mid-Hudson/FDR Bridge. At 212 feet tall and 1.28 miles long, it is the longest, elevated pedestrian bridge in the world. Lovely views at sunrise, when it opens, and when it closes at dusk. https://www.walkway.org/

Remember the old train tracks near Palen Road & Rt. 82 in Hopewell? They ripped them out and made a vehicle-free trail! Dutchess County recently completed the Dutchess Rail Trail - a 13-mile linear park stretching through the heart of the County from East Fishkill all the way to the Walkway Over the Hudson. Free parking at Daddy'O's in Hopewell under the overpass and at various locations along the trail. Walk, run, stroll or bike your hometown!

Bike rentals available at Leisure Ride Bike Rental: 266 Titusville Rd, Pok, NY, 845-486-8125, https://www.facebook.com/leisurerides  (call ahead)

Want to hit the waterpark with your family? Splashdown Beach in Fishkill behind the old Fishkill Roller Derby (now gone!) is a great place to cool down. http://www.splashdownbeach.com/

Remember the old Fishkill Drive-In? Well, that's long gone *sadness* (saw Star Wars there!). But Lagrange still has Overlook Drive-In! And if you stay through Monday, you get bargain night $6 all tickets!

Fishkill Mall (opposite the old Holiday Inn, now Ramada) has indoor movies, as does the Poughkeepsie Galleria and discount, 2nd run movies at South Hills Mall.

Oh, the good old days at Taghkanic State Park beach! Remember them? Remember how to spell it? Doesn't matter--it's still there. East Beach is closed, but camping and West Beach are still going strong. Kayak, row boat and peddleboat rentals available. Concessions & new beach house, too!

Red Wing Lake is still open, too.

Hudson Valley history was BORING when we were in high school! But now, as old fogies, you might enjoy steeping in it! Highly recommend the newly renovated FDR Library. This is a very cool thing to have an actual PRESIDENT be from your home county. Go celebrate it! http://www.fdrlibrary.marist.edu/

Want to enjoy HV cultural events? It's a full weekend at Bard summerscape (opera!), Vassar College's reknown Powerhouse Theatre, HV Shakespeare Fest at Boscobel or just enjoy a pack-your-own picnic at one of the HV's many historic mansions.

Do you love fine dining? Me, too! The Culinary Institute of America is awesome--alas, it will be closed July 26–August 19. Reopens August 20. But the HV is all about "farm-to-table" lately. In fact, we ARE the farm for many NYC and HV restaurant tables. Too many restaurants to list.

Tons in Poughkeepsie and Main Street in Fishkill, including, YES -- it's still there-- Friendly's on Main. I also love Mexican at Maya Cafe on Rt. 9 in Fishkill just south of I-84 (formerly Moogs Bar!).

Joe's Dairy Bar is still there, too, on Rt. 82 in Hopewell.

So is, btw, Mr. Bill Green, Director at the Hopewell Rec Center! Go there, see how awesome it is. They still have the evening hoops league (don't pull a muscle!) and now sand volleyball courts, an outdoor roller rink, pavilion and walking paths.

If waterfront dining if your thing, get thee to Poughkeepsie or the Newburgh waterfront. Newburgh has walking paths, bars, cafes, marinas, al fresco dining and ...ribs at Bill Joe's Ribworks. It's a very nice evening on the waterfront. Poughkeepsie has waterfront path, wine bars, seafood, Italian food & live entertainment at Mahoney's Irish Pub.

Can't decide between Poughkeepsie & Newburgh waterfront dining? Take an exhilarating 60 mph water ride from Shadows Marina in Poughkeepsie to the beautiful Newburgh waterfront in just 20 minutes on Shadow One! Call for reservations.

To sample some fresh, local produce, drop by the old Fishkill Farms (picking blueberries now) and check out the food & live entertainment on weekends. You're just in time for the re-opening of Barton Orchards on Beekman Road, 3 miles east of the Taconic (u-pick, market & bakery). Good old Meadowbrook Farms just down the road from rival Ketcham High (boo!!!) is still there, and so are the cider donuts. (market, baked goods, local syrup & honey, farm animals)

Remember Beacon? Well, it's changed...for the good. Think Brooklyn Upstate. Live music, upscale dining, antiques, quirky stores that sell quirky things. No, you can't buy blue jeans at Fish's on Main anymore, but right next door you can visit the Towne Crier, formerly of Pawling. Great live music & food.

Tired of being down in the valley? Get higher...climb way up to the top of the HV for some great views by hiking Mount Beacon or Breakneck !

Tired? Me, too. Get some homestyle diner meals like a milkshake or fries & gravy at any of the great diners in Fishkill including 84-Diner and the new Red Line Diner on Rt. 9.

And lest you think we're in the dark ages--there's a Starbucks there, too, and a Panera!

Enjoy reunion weekend and come back real soon, y'hear?
